In the Shadow of the Sun Part 1: Danny Boyle and Brian Cox on Sunshine

As part of BFI Southbank's Film Science season, author, broadcaster and scientist Adam Rutherford hosted an 'illuminating' panel discussion on the sun, with participants including director Danny Boyle, Prof. Brian Cox, artist Honor Harger and scientist Dr Lucie Green. In this clip, Danny Boyle explains some of the challenges he faced with his 2007 film Sunshine, particularly in constructing a story which meets audience expectations of what space looks and feels like, but which does not compromise scientific accuracy. Professor Brian Cox, consultant on the film, describes the psychologies of a physicist that he tried to impart to star Cillian Murphy, and explores how the film's conclusion provides a very literal representation of a scientist's immersion in their work.
