Long Live Film: Nitrate Season

Long Live Film is a two month programme of events and screenings marking the 75th anniversary of the BFI National Archive in 2010. Here Head Curator Robin Baker discusses one of the pivotal projects associated with the anniversary, the very rare and exclusive projection of nitrate film, and outlines in detail the historical importance of the format and the difficulties involved in its maintenance. BFI is the only cinema in the UK licensed to project nitrate film, and as part of this season the BFI will be providing audiences with the opportunity to see a number of these magnificent original prints through the months of July and August. A must see for all film enthusiasts.
