Saturday Night and Sunday Morning + Q&A

Actor Shirley Anne Field introduces Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (UK 1960) at a special screening for BFI members at BFI Southbank. In conversation with the Artistic Director of BFI Southbank, Eddie Berg, Field talks about her first slightly awkward meeting with Karel Reisz, but reveals they managed to build an excellent working relationship in an environment where the camera crew were as important as the actors. Field credits Reisz for successfully creating a world so different to his own and the whole production for collaborating to portray real working class characters with empathy and without condescension. Field also discusses the difficulties the production had in passing the censor due the abortion storyline, but concludes that Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was ahead of it's time in surfacing this taboo.
