Sight & Sound Presents: Producer Jeremy Thomas on Bernardo Bertolucci

Renowned British producer Jeremy Thomas (Bad Timing, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Sexy Beast) talks to Sight & Sound's Web Editor Nick Bradshaw about his long working relationship with Bernardo Bertolucci, on the occasion of the BFI's major retrospective of Bertolucci's work. The pair have collaborated on five features, including The Sheltering Sky (1990), Little Buddha (1993), Stealing Beauty (1996) and The Dreamers (2003).

Thomas recalls their first meeting in a Chinese restaurant, discussing the project that would become the multi-Oscar-winning The Last Emperor (1987), and relates the pressures and privileges of working with a cast of thousands in Beijing's Hidden City. He provides insight into Bertolucci's remarkable craftsmanship, discusses the mixed receptions to their subsequent collaborations and holds out hope that the pair will finally finish a new film soon.
