Dickens Press Launch

Kicking off the BFI’s comprehensive celebration of Dickens on Screen, marking the bicentenary of England’s greatest author, actor Sir Derek Jacobi and writer David Nicholls describe what it is about the novelist’s work that makes for such fascinating film and TV drama.

Jacobi, a veteran of numerous adaptations of the author’s stories, highlights some of his quirkier Dickensian roles, including playing Scrooge in a Sony Christmas advert. Nicholls, whose screenplay for a new adaptation of Great Expectations is currently in production, reads out a short passage from the original to illustrate the cinematic sensibility of the writer’s literature, which, he says, reads like ‘a storyboard’.
