David Lynch Season Introduction

Writer and film curator Antony Todd introduces a David Lynch season at BFI Southbank with a lecture focussing on the director's early career. He discusses Lynch's debut feature Eraserhead (1977) in the context of American underground and earlier avant garde cinema, explains how the director deferred to the storytelling process for his follow up The Elephant Man (1980), and argues that it was only with the release of Blue Velvet (1986) that Lynch emerged as a public personality.
