Against a Trans Narrative

A provocative experimental documentary investigating dominant constructions of trans-masculine identity and the nature of community.

Festival veteran Jules Rosskam (transparent, F. Scott Fitzgerald Slept Here) returns to the LLGFF for the world premiere of Against a Trans Narrative, a provocative experimental documentary that investigates dominant constructions of trans-masculine identity and the nature of community. In the vein of Marlon Rigg's Tongues Untied, Against a Trans Narrative fuses a genre-busting combination of intimate diary footage, stylized dramatic scenes, spoken word performance, faux audition tapes, and roundtable interview footage to initiate a dialogue between feminists, queers, and transfolk about the way we construct personal and history narratives. As in Rosskam's other work, careful attention is paid to the ways generation, race, class, and culture impact our understandings of gender. Certain to spark a lively festival dialogue, this powerfully emotional film will appeal to anyone who has ever struggled to reconcile their identity with the communities they belong to.
