black./womyn.: conversations with lesbians of African descent
Epic documentary featuring the voices of a wide and varied host of out black lesbians.
Epic documentary featuring the voices of a wide and varied host of out black lesbians. Over a period of six years Tiona M. has collected the oral testimonies of nearly 50 women who share their experiences and views. The result is an extensive and enjoyable discussion of issues such as coming out, religion, marriage, activism, disability, age, discrimination, the media, gender identity and sexuality through a series of absorbing talking heads. Amongst the film's high points are a serious discussion of homophobia and violence; a difficult and often ignored look at what it is to be queer and disabled; and a light-hearted and seemingly exhaustive exploration of the spectrum of identities that exist within the black lesbian community - are you a 'fish' or a 'futch'? With contributions from poets Cheryl Clarke and Staceyann Chin, filmmaker and activist Aishah Shahidah Simmons, artist Hanifah Walidah (U People) and Hip-Hop duo KIN.
