Out of the Shadows: Queer Film Noir

Gilda

An indisputable noir classic with sparkling dialogue and a show-stopping performance from Rita Hayworth.

Small time crook Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) is rescued from a gunman one night by casino owner Ballin Mundson (George Macready). Mundsen recruits Farrell as his right hand man and they initially they seem the perfect duo, until the boss announces his marriage to Gilda (Hayworth), a feisty maneater with whom Farrell had previous relations.

From the sparkling dialogue to the show-stopping performance from Rita Hayworth, there are many queer pleasures to be had from Gilda. The fabulous Hayworth may be at her most desirable here, but the sexual tension that simmers from the screen is exclusively that between the leading men. When discussing Gilda, Ford once said of his on-screen relationship with Macready, "Of course, we knew their relationship was homosexual." From those opening moments when Macready picks up Ford in a dimly lit alleyway, their relationship can hardly be read as anything but.
