The Marching Season

Local documentary looking at Pride 2007 in London and Riga.

If you looked at the rain last London Pride day and wondered if a wet trudge down Oxford St was really worth the effort, this local documentary provides some food for thought. Set in June 2007 we follow Pride participants in London and Riga, Latvia's capital as they prepare for two very different events.

While we celebrated our 35th year, Riga held their first officially sanctioned march. Opposed by a chilling combination of religious fundamentalist and neo-nazi groups the Riga march was by necessity a solemn and political act. By contrast, in London some worry that the political origins of Pride have become lost in what we now call our Parade. But from the Imaan float to an Age Concern rickshaw you don't have to look far to find dedicated marchers in London.

Asking important questions about the purpose and future of Pride, this is a timely reminder of the reasons why we march. Following this screening there will be a talk with Paul Birrell and Emma Hands of Pride London.
