Water Lilies

Beautifully filmed and acted study of femininity and youth

It's summer in the French suburbs and fifteen-year-old Marie is perhaps a bit in love with Florian, the sultry star of a local synchronised swimming team. Meanwhile, best friend Anne longs for a boy who doesn't care for her. As the summer unfolds the three girls, in their different ways, come of age.

Told without cliché or sentimentality this beautifully-acted piece is as much a study of femininity as it is of youth. The 'synchro' displays perfectly convey the seemingly impossible demands of womanhood - all smiles on the surface while frantic treading of water keeps the girls afloat.
