With Gilbert and George
Following this screening there will be a discussion with the director and we hope to be joined by Gilbert and GeorgeShot over seventeen years this is a personal tribute to the vibrant creative partnership that is Gilbert and George. A former model of the artists, Julian Cole traces their journey from the early Singing Sculpture to their 2007 retrospective at the Tate Modern in 2007.
Traversing the globe from Beijing to Moscow to Venice the film builds a unique picture of not only their public art but also their art of living. Gilbert and George are humorous, likeable and really enjoy life. There are interviews with former models and, as to be expected, art specialists. However it is the recounting of their own lives in their own words that gives this film the edge. Cole has access to their personal archives and uses them to good effect.
The film reminds us of their legacy as they challenged our ideas about Englishness, race and sexuality. This is a deep and insightful portrait. Following this screening there will be a discussion with the director and we hope to be joined by Gilbert and George.
