The World Unseen

Political and sexual awakening in 50s apartheid South Africa

London-based Shamim Sarif's debut is a heartfelt period romance that captures the political and sexual awakening of two Indian women under the regime of South African apartheid in 1952.

Miriam, a dutiful Indian mother, lives in the countryside with her boorish husband and her small children. While lunching at the Location Café in Cape Town, Miriam encounters Amina, a political, trouser-wearing spitfire who covertly co-owns the lively café with her 'coloured' business partner, Jacob. Cautiously attracted, Miriam and Amina's friendship soon develops into a passionate yet impossible affair. However, when Amina protects Miriam's sister-in-law from the police, her political actions threaten to alter their lives forever.

Solidly cast, with Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth as the two gorgeous leads, The World Unseen is a timeless love story that contemplates community, responsibility, and personal freedom with a daring and warm heart.
