In the narrative, set in mid-sixties America, tomboy Lou struggles not to lose her best friend to the lure of dress patterns and boys. Meanwhile, grown women look back on their childhoods and talk candidly about intense friendships, fear of 'lezzies' and moments of sexual awakening. As dreamy as a half-forgotten summer Hide and Seek questions generalisations about what makes a girl queer.
