Recasting Gender: Reflections on Transgender Representation

With the recent explosion of transgender visibility in mainstream and alternative media, this panel discussion seeks to take a broad but critical look at the visual language and narratives of recent transgender media representation. From reality programming and Hollywood films to the vast artistic production from transgender and queer communities, our diverse and esteemed panel will discuss and debate the contemporary condition and future direction of transgender representation.

Confirmed panelists include Calpernia Addams, actress (Casting Pearls, CSI, Gray’s Anatomy), producer (Beautiful Daughters), and media consultant (Transamerica); Jason Barker, filmmaker and co-director of Transfabulous; Gwen Haworth, director (She’s A Boy I Knew); Kam Wai Kui, festival director, Netherlands Transgender Film Festival; and co-moderators Kyle Stephan, LLGFF programmer, and Jay Stewart, founder of Gendered Intelligence and PhD, Visual Cultures Dept, Goldsmiths College.
