The NFTS has announced the launch of a new MA course in Film Studies Programming & Curation, delivered in partnership with the BFI.

This two-year MA course has been designed for people who want a career in film and media culture, whether this is in curation, exhibition, criticism, archives, preservation or restoration.

Students on this course will gain a thorough understanding of the process by which a film moves from a creative idea to an audience experience. It includes an exploration of the history, theory and critical contexts of film, with optional units that allow a more specialised focus on industry practices in programming, curation, archives and film criticism through project work and research portfolios.

Highlights includes a professional placement at the BFI, and attendance at the BFI London Film Festival.

Dr Paul Gerhardt, BFI Director of Education, said:

This exciting new course reflects the growing importance of film knowledge, film writing and film programming in extending the cultural impact of film. By strengthening qualifications in these areas we are creating a more rounded UK film industry for the future, and so we are delighted to be able to deliver this through our close partnership with the NFTS.

Dr Jon Wardle, Deputy Director & Director of Curriculum & Registrar, said:

The NFTS enjoys a strong relationship with the BFI with whom it has previously partnered on other activities such as Passport to Cinema that runs weekly at the BFI South Bank, a filmmaking Massive Open Online Course and the annual BFI Film Academy Residential for 16-19 year- olds. So we are delighted to be able to develop this relationship to deliver our first MA together in Film Studies, Programming and Curation.

Based at the internationally acclaimed NFTS and its historic film studios, students on this course benefit from working in a creative environment among the School’s talented student filmmakers. They also enjoy access to the School’s world-class facilities and events, including masterclasses with major film and television screenwriters, producers, directors, cinematographers etc.,
