BAFTAs 2016: the nominations in full

With nine nominations each, Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ Carol take pole position after the announcement of the nominations for the 2016 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs).

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s survival drama The Revenant follows with eight nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road on seven. Other films with multiple nominations include Brooklyn and The Martian with six, The Big Short, The Danish Girl and Ex Machina with five and Star Wars: The Force Awakens with four.

Competing in the best film category are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Carol, The Revenant and Spotlight, with all but one of their respective directors all also receiving a best director nod; here Spotlight’s Thomas McCarthy misses a spot in favour of Ridley Scott for The Martian.

Last year’s best actor winner Eddie Redmayne is up again this year for The Danish Girl, while his co-star Alicia Vikander has two nods: as best actress for The Danish Girl and best supporting actress for Ex Machina. Other best actor nominees are Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Matt Damon (The Martian) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs). Competing with Vikander for best actress are Cate Blanchett (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Brie Larson (Room) and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van).

British films contending for the outstanding British film award are Brooklyn, The Danish Girl, Ex Machina, 45 Years, Amy and The Lobster.

The six nominated films supported with Lottery through the BFI Film Fund, which between them have garnered 11 nominations, are: 45 Years, A Syrian Love Story, Brooklyn, The Lobster, Second Coming and The Survivalist.

Carol first screened to UK audiences at the 58th BFI London Film Festival. Other nominated films that premiered at LFF include Brooklyn, Steve Jobs, Room, The Lady in the Van, He Named Me Malala, Beasts of No Nation, The Assassin, Theeb, Timbuktu, Wild Tales and Sherpa.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 14 February.
