Oscars 2016: the nominations in full

The Leonardo DiCaprio frontier drama The Revenant leads the way with 12 nods after the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominations. Its nominations include for best picture and best director, offering the chance for filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu to repeat last year’s Oscars success with Birdman. DiCaprio is nominated for best actor.

Mad Max: Fury Road takes second place with 10 nominations (including best picture, best director and numerous technical categories), with Ridley Scott’s The Martian on seven.

British successes include best picture nods for the BFI-backed drama Brooklyn (which is also nominated for Nick Hornby’s adapted screenplay) and The Martian. Brooklyn’s Irish star Saoirse Ronan is nominated for best actress, along with Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years (which also received BFI Film Fund backing). Eddie Redmayne is among the contenders for best actor for The Danish Girl. Kate Winslet is nominated for best supporting actress for Steve Jobs, while Christian Bale (The Big Short) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) are both up for supporting actor. Alex Garland’s British sci-fi film Ex Machina receives two nominations, for original screenplay and visual effects.

Eight films are competing for best picture, with Spotlight, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies and Room rounding out this category. Todd Haynes’s Carol is a surprising omission here, though it garnered six other nominations, including best actress for Cate Blanchett.

British animation Shaun the Sheep Movie is a contender for best animated film, facing competition from Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa and Pixar’s Inside Out.

Brooklyn, Room, Trumbo, Anomalisa, Steve Jobs, Carol, When Marnie Was There, Youth and foreign language film contenders Son of Saul, Embrace of the Serpent and Theeb are among the nominated films that first screened to UK audiences at the BFI London Film Festival.
