Leeds United archive footage

We join with all who wish the best for Leeds United Football Club as they face their current financial crisis. No one would want to see the demise of a football club with over 100 years of history. But history can also show that in dark times there is reason to hope, since this is not the first time in their history that Leeds United has faced a significant financial crisis, and the 80 years of achievement in between shows the resilience of this great club.

In 1924 Leeds United faced the repayment of a debt of £35,000 to the outgoing chairman. They approached this in a novel way, by launching their 'Lend us a Fiver' Campaign. They asked all of their supporters to lend them £5, the idea being that if 7000 supporters responded, the sum would be raised. This newsreel is from Topical Budget, the only wholly British silent newsreel, now owned and housed at the BFI. This particular item was a special edition story, released only in the Leeds area, and was one of the ways in which the campaign was publicised.
