Film Sales

The Film Sales Department licences rights to a catalogue of films to distributors and broadcasters worldwide. The catalogue has details of the different types of feature films, shorts, animation and documentaries, many of which were produced by the bfi over the past 50 years.

Derek Jarman's 'Caravaggio' (1986) is available from Film Sales

Feature films include such contemporary arthouse classics as Peter Greenaway's The Draughtsman's Contract, Derek Jarman's Caravaggio and John Maybury's Love is the Devil.

The many shorts in the collection includes the 2001 BAFTA best short winner Shadowscan directed by Tinge Krishnan and exciting work by other up and coming directors such as Richard Kwietniowski and Lynne Ramsay. We also have early shorts from great directors such as Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Stephen Frears and Peter Greenaway. We are regularly acquiring new short films for international distribution, recent additions include the new Sean Ellis film Cashback, new shorts from Alnoor Dewshi, Spiritual Rampage and 77 Beds and the 1998 Oscar nominee Holiday Romance.

Animated work includes the Quay Brothers' short films, and the classic films of Lotte Reiniger (whose Adventures of Prince Achmed was the earliest animated feature film).

Documentaries include such distinctive titles as Patrick Keiller's London, Kevin MacDonald's Howard Hawks: American Artist, and the critically acclaimed Century of Cinema series.

A growing part of our catalogue is re-discoveries from the Archives and reissues of early classics, such as South, the original documentary of Ernest Shackleton's ill-stared 1914-16 Antartic expedition, Michael Powell's 1937 feature The Edge of the World, the classic British 1929 silent film Piccadilly starring Anna Mae Wong, complete with a new score composed by Neil Brand, and the Paul Czinner 1937 adaptation of As You Like It with Laurence Olivier.
