The aim of this study day is to consider three critical perspectives and associated theorists: constructing / performing gender (bell hooks, Van Zoonen and Butler); Semiotics (Barthes); and Postmodernism (Lyotard and Baudrillard). Theory will be applied and examined as students consider examples from popular entertainment such as the music videos of Janelle Monae and the film Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022).
Key ideas from critical perspectives will be identified and explored as well as the effect of these on text and audience. Activities will supply students with a range of resources and examples for use in their exam preparation and also explain how theories can provide an insight into how many contemporary issues are portrayed in the media, and how these can divide audiences. In the afternoon we will be joined by a guest speaker for an insightful interview and Q&A.
Our in-venue events take place in one of the BFI’s auditoriums, school groups are encouraged to engage in an interactive lecture where learning activities using clips are designed to peek interest. Students are supported to share their thoughts and ideas helping to build confidence and deepen understanding. It is hoped the Q&A with industry professionals will provide a rare and memorable experience which brings the subject to life for students.

- £12.50 per student. Accompanying teachers / adults are charged £1 per 5 students – otherwise student rate applies.
- £40 for teachers attending without students.
