Ron Martin

Head of Collections Management

Before joining the BFI in 2008, Ron worked at Independent Television News (ITN) as Director of Archive Resources. While there he was responsible for a 24/7 service to Reuters newsrooms worldwide, together with the range of archive services necessary for the delivery of ITV News, Channel 4 News, Channel 5 News and other ITN productions. An in-house clip sales team was also supported by his Archive Resources team. At ITN, Ron oversaw the introduction of digital storage technologies to the archive and the successful integration of archive and newsroom workflows.

As Head of Collections Management, Ron is responsible for the examination and preparation of film materials for a range of purposes, including acquisition, theatrical exhibition and digitisation for access purposes and the safe preservation and transportation of the archive’s collections. He is also responsible for the team that ensures that our clients get what they need from the archive, when they need it. During his time at the BFI Ron has been involved with the design decisions and operational plans relating to the creation of the BFI’s sub-zero, low humidity Master Film Store based in Warwickshire, initiatives for multiskilling Vaults and Conservation Specialist staff, digitisation initiatives, and the plans and procurement process for the introduction of a preservation and access infrastructure for the digital collections of the BFI National Archive.
