Steve Bryant

Steve joined the BFI in 1988 as head of the Archive’s television team, after ten years in the BBC’s television archives. He moved into the curatorial team when it was established in 2008 as senior curator of television, remaining in that post until he retired in 2017.

His BFI publication The Television Heritage (1989) was instrumental in achieving the statutory provision for TV archiving which has been the cornerstone of the Archive’s television work. He curated a number of BFI television seasons, including classic comedy and chat shows, and was among the initiators of the Missing Believed Wiped campaign to find lost television programmes. He was on the executive council of the International Federation of Television Archives from 1992 to 2012, serving two terms as general secretary and chairing the Programming and Production Commission and the Television Studies Commission. He was also a member of the board of the Peabody Awards.
