'I decided to use the inside of a juke box as my inspiration for the setting – garishly lit in primary colours' Vincente Minnelli
Adapted from a novel by James Jones (the best-selling author of From Here to Eternity), Minnelli's masterpiece - a witty and passionate indictment of hypocrisy and complacency in post-war small-town America – deserves to be much better known.
Frank Sinatra stars in one of his greatest roles as Dave Hirsh, an ex-serviceman and disillusioned writer who, after a wild night's drinking, finds himself on a Greyhound bus heading for his home town in Indiana.
Dave's unexpected arrival creates immediate tension in his outwardly respectable family. True to form, he quickly finds himself a partner-in-crime, professional gambler – and professional drinker - Bama Dillert (Dean Martin). He also finds himself torn between two very different women - flamboyant, good-natured floozy Ginny Moorhead (Shirley MacLaine) and refined schoolteacher Gwen French (Martha Hyer).
Some Came Running features an array of superb performances, great colour CinemaScope photography, and a tremendous score – both jazzy and lyrical – by Elmer Bernstein.
