Any excuse to performative self-abnegation, I'm in. In that spirit, I decided to rule ineligible any film that made 2012's top 50 and any director who made the top 25 in overall mentions. Somehow that still leaves Douglas Sirk, Abbas Kiarostami, Robert Altman and Chris Marker in the mix. But sorry, Luis Buñuel, the rules of the game stack yet again in your disfavour. Otherwise, I made a conscious choice to skew toward new and LGBTQ.
