Once upon a Time in America

1983 USA, Italy

For me, the film Once Upon a Time in America is an ode to cinema.

It is a perfect combination between dramatic design, masterfully accompanied by the music of the master Moricone and where each sound effect is a fundamental part of the plot and makes the sound montage also a dramatic element.

In addition to being one of the most superb performances of Robert De Niro

Dersu Uzala

1975 USSR, Japan

It is a film about the human dimension of man versus nature. It is an intimate and epic film at the same time.

With simple language Akira Kurosawa takes us into a world of excitement. Forest's beauty, its vastness, loneliness, trap, snow, sunset, moon, fire, water, wind, all these characteristics of nature is shown in the true spirits. If we see the movie it will be remembered till our death.

In the Mood for Love

2000 Hong Kong, France

It is a film of sublime elegance, where every detail leads us to subtly perceive the impossibility of love and the struggle of these two almost celestial beings to avoid the ineluctable destiny of separation.

La strada

1954 Italy

I consider one of Fellini's best films, it represents the innocence and tenderness made flesh in Gelsomina, A film about the encounter or disagreement of two beings who live a love story on the margins of the world, in the best style of Greek tragedy, which only awaits a tragic end. Directed and acted to the superlative.

YING XIONG (Hero)

2002

Hero is an epic-lyrical film, a true hymn to beauty and an ode to the spectacular nature of martial arts, but without neglecting the aesthetic treatment of all the elements in great harmony, the colors, nature, the music that the dialogues they act as slow and thoughtful counterpoint. Signifying with all the sense of TEMPO.

Citizen Kane

1941 USA

It is a film with an internal montage, the sequence shots, the management of the depth of field, the spectacular sets, the precision of the optics and the photography, make the film: a masterpiece of cinema and I agree with Richard Brody, the critic of the The New Yorker describing it as "An ecstasy of light and shadow, of clashing textures and graphic forms, the likes of which had not been seen since the silent era"

UKAMAU

1966 Bolivia

Sanjinés, the Bolivian filmmaker who unquestionably made avant-garde cinema with an overwhelming force, just think of Ukamau, a beautiful and subtly poetic film, enough reason and inspiration for me to choose to dedicate my life to this art.

Uccellacci e uccellini

1966 Italy

It is a metaphorical fable, like that metaphor of little birds and little birds that end up crushing each other. A cinematographic exercise provided with absurd humor, irony, poetry and with its marked ideological touches very much in the Pasolini style.

But a cinematographic rarity that is important to see.

Cinema Paradiso

1988 Italy, France

It is a poetic and very loving ode to cinema

HONG GAOLIANG

1987 People's Republic of China

A film where hate and love are represented through a deaf violence, and the violence exerted against women and repressed feelings that explode with a sublime aesthetic level and a superlative handling of the drama.

The films that I chose are part of the best cinematographic experiences that I had in my academic training at the Film School in Rome and I chose them not only for their cinematographic quality, but also because they are part of my most cherished memories.
