onedotzero preview: Año Uña
Touching experimental coming-of-age story.
21-year-old American student Mollie is staying with a family in Mexico City and the subject of plenty of attention from young Diego, 14-years-old and with girls on the brain. This coming-of-age story uses hundreds of real photographs to tell the fictional tale and marks director Jonás Cuarón as a new talent to watch out for.
Año Uña is written and directed by Jonás Cuarón, son of director Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tu Mamá También, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) who has also executive produced this film. It is an innovative fresh and funny coming of age story about an American girl who goes to study Spanish in Mexico City. Diego (played by rising star Diego Catana, star of Duck Season and Lake Tahoe and also the director's half brother!) is the horny 14 year old boy of the family she stays with, who falls in love/lust with her, and follows her back to New York, much to her surprise. It is an
inventive and wonderfully observed film comprised entirely of still photographs with original and witty voice over dialogue.
Variety called it "Thoughtful, tender and hip" and the acclaimed Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Motorcycle Diaries, Babel) who is championing the film (his company will release in Mexico in Fall 08) called it "A perfect
film, made with intelligence and, above all, loving care".
