Founded in September 1933, the BFI is one of the oldest and most distinguished government-supported cultural institutions in the world. Throughout its history it has found itself serving very diverse publics and has been a focal point of debate about national film and TV culture and often been at the centre of controversy. Its Archive (founded 1935) and National Film Theatre (1952) set the pattern for cinematheques the world over. It has produced and distributed films, and supported a regional network of film exhibition. It has pioneered film education in this country and through its magazine Sight and Sound, its book publishing and video publishing, it has acted to promote moving image culture for the past 75 years. This display draws on the fascinating collections of the BFI's recently catalogued archival records to explore and celebrate the long and rich history of this unique institution.
