Growing up at the height of the British Empire, David Lean would go on to be the principle pallbearer at its funeral. In his epic films Lawrence of Arabia, A Passage to India and The Bridge on the River Kwai we see him evoke powerful moments of imperial decline, but not always with great awareness to post-colonial sensitivities.
