Eastwood's return to the Western takes the traditional theme of a mysterious stranger (here, a preacher played by the director) arriving in town to help the beleaguered victims of robber barons, and plays it for the most part unusually straight. Bruce Surtees' fine cinematography makes highly expressive use of the landscape, while a fine cast - Michael Moriarty, Chris Penn and Carrie Snodgrass included - lends sterling support.
