Chester Gould's comic strip is brought to life by Beatty in spectacular fashion, stylishly shot in bold, primary colours by Vittorio Storaro with Oscar-winning art direction by Richard Sylbert. Decked out in a bright yellow trenchcoat and hat, Beatty's detective tackles a series of grotesque bad guys played by big-name actors (Pacino, Dustin Hoffman) barely recognisable under heavy makeup, as Madonna's Breathless Mahoney croons her way through a series of Stephen Sondheim numbers.
