Early Chaplin: Programme 1
Ninety minutes of early Chaplin, including his Keystone debut.
A special pick of early Chaplin films, including his Keystone debut and the first outing for the 'tramp' character. Introduced by Bryony Dixon.

In Making a Living, Chaplin's Keystone debut, Charlie and Henry Lehrman are rivals for a job as a reporter, battling it out to be first to the editor with a scoop. Kid Auto Races is justly famous for being the first outing for the 'tramp' character in an improvised affair shot at an actual children's push-car race at Venice. Mabel's Strange Predicament takes place in a boarding house where a tipsy Charlie, playing a lascivious guest, bothers Mabel and other female guests. Mabel gets in trouble with her boyfriend, an elderly husband gets in trouble with his wife, and Charlie gets in trouble with everybody, to say nothing of the dog!
Between Showers casts Charlie with Keystone's main star Ford Sterling and revolves around a stolen umbrella and the proverbial 'park, pretty girl and policeman'. A Film Johnnie sees Charlie at the Keystone Studios causing mayhem through his complete inability to distinguish between film and reality.
