In between films with Dietrich, von Sternberg took on this version of Theodore Dreiser's novel, planned for Sergei Eisenstein. Discarding the social message implicit in the story of a deprived boy who kills his pregnant girlfriend to marry a rich one, he delivered a courtroom drama that goaded Dreiser to sue and made Eisenstein his life-long enemy.
