No one was surprised when word reached the media that Lynch was planning to adapt the true story of a 73 year-old man, Alvin Straight (Farnsworth), who travelled across America on a lawnmower, in search of his estranged brother. Yet Lynch's slow, 'straight' treatment of this material wrong-footed most, even as it marked a return to the humanist qualities that had distinguished his handling of The Elephant Man.
