A retired actress returns to her home village to confront a mystery, a small alarm and some eternal truths.
An elegiac but perversely jaunty film about settling accounts, centred
on women. Retired actress Morimoto retreats to her summer home in the mountains to discover that her elderly gardener has hanged himself, leaving a terse last note and a mysterious stone. A convict escapes but little else happens; emotional and psychological truths are explored. Shindo's last film with his late wife, Nobuko Otowa.
