A young boy is forced to feign road accidents to scam motorists for compensation in Nagisa Oshima's famous meditation on truth and lies in appearances.

Introduction by Alexander Jacoby Sat 12 Jul, 18:30.

A pre-teen boy has been trained by his father and step-mother to run in front of moving cars and feign injury; the terrified drivers are scammed for compensation. Shooting in colour and 'Scope, Oshima lets the sociological side of things take care of itself while he focuses on the boy's guiltless, yearning fantasy life. An intensely moving meditation on the truth of appearances.
