Often cited as Kon Ichikawa's personal favourite among his films and based on a novel by Mishima, Conflagration tells the tale of a tortured young priest who destroys the thing he most reveres.
An adaptation of Mishima's great novel Temple of the Golden Pavilion, often cited by Ichikawa as his personal favourite among his films. Mizoguchi (Raizo Ichikawa in award-winning form) becomes an acolyte in the most beautiful temple in Kyoto, but his purity is impotent. Despair in the face of immorality and corruption leads him into shocking acts of vandalism and self-destruction.
