After being sunk in the Gulf of St. Lawrence by the Canadian Air Force, six German U-boat survivors attempt to escape into the United States.

The rough cut of Powell's wartime propaganda picture ran over five hours. When the original editor fell ill, Lean was asked to impose the necessary order. Powell's reminiscence provides an index of the inspired but meticulous eye he brought to the task: 'I felt as a general with an unprotected rear must feel when he learns that some insubordinate young commander has arrived with reinforcements.'
