Bleak House

A deft, streamlined 1920 adaptation of Dickens' epic novel.

After his 1917 Dombey and Son - which scenarist Eliot Stannard controversially relocated to contemporary London - the prolific Elvey returned to Dickens, now more conventionally. This deft condensation concentrates 'the most dramatic of all the tales embedded in the book': 'Lady Dedlock's Secret'. She is strikingly played by Constance Collier, who had made her name nearly 20 years previously, as Nancy in Herbert Beerbohm Tree's stage version of Oliver Twist.

With live piano accompaniment by Andrew Youdell on Thu 8 Mar and Cyrus Gabrysch on Sat 17 Mar.
