Known, a little misleadingly, as Malle's 'incest movie', this is actually an elegant, tender account of a teenage boy growing up in 50s Dijon and finding that the cosy comforts of a bourgeois family can also be a serious constraint to all manner of impulses, sex included. Subtle and often amusing in its insights, the film remains as fresh as the Charlie Parker classics on the soundtrack.
