Capitalising on his From Here to Eternity success, Sinatra eagerly grabbed such meaty, challenging roles as this. Here playing Frankie Machine, a pathetic yet sympathetic heroin addict, working as a card dealer while dreaming of success as a jazz drummer, he perfectly embodies a sickly sensitive personality. Preminger gives the whole thing an edgy, atmospheric feel and Kim Novak lends suitably understated support, in this impressive (if much toned-down) adaptation of Nelson Algren's novel.
