Military prisoners of war escape from their German captors and embark on a desperate train journey to freedom across Italy, led by ultra-tough American soldier Ryan. In what was undoubtedly the most successful action movie of Sinatra's career, at the age of 50 he was able to carry off rather well the hard-bitten, martinet persona of Ryan and this has remained one of his most perennially popular films.
