Sven, a young man in his twenties, opts for an alternative to doing military service, and goes to work at the site of Auschwitz concentration camp - or rather the Polish town of Oswiecim, whose inhabitants treat it as they would any other. There he encounters a former inmate who still lives next to the camp memorial and reminisces about his experiences, and a young interpreter who is desperate to leave.
