Haneke's masterly film raises profound questions about contemporary urban existence.

A single thoughtless act of litter-dropping triggers a chain of events in which various characters are forced, through a series of calculatedly fragmented scenes, to examine their own cultural identity and their attitudes towards others. Haneke set the film in Paris because it was one of the most overtly multicultural cities he knew, and his masterly film raises profound questions about contemporary urban existence.
