71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance

Haneke paints a mordant and painfully plausible fresco of contemporary urban life.

Using a fragmented, jigsaw-like narrative to chart a sequence of apparently unconnected events leading, as fortune (or fate?) would have it, to a seemingly motiveless murder, Haneke paints a mordant and painfully plausible fresco of contemporary urban life. Compelling and suspenseful, the film builds to a bitter climax that shows how the media distort, trivialize and tidy up even the most sobering and haphazard events.
