Based on Michael Ondaatje's novel, Minghella's prize-winning epic tale of love and war - ranging from the Sahara to Italy at the end of World War II - revolves around the glamorous star-crossed lovers played by Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas. But Binoche also attracted much praise for her role as Hana, the compassionate nurse who looks after the severely burnt 'English patient' - gaining her an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
