Originally to be directed by Nicolas Roeg, this camp, colourful, even slightly kinky space opera stays remarkably faithful to Alex Raymond's original comic strip and the Buster Crabbe/Saturday morning serials. While ex-Playgirl model Jones makes for a somewhat wooden hero, saving mankind from Max Von Sydow's evil emperor Ming The Merciless, production designer Danilo Donati's ornate, elaborate sets beautifully capture Raymond's Rococo style and the Queen rock-opera soundtrack is a guilty pleasure. Enormous fun.
