Great Expectations
Lean rigorously pared down Dickens' epic novel to create a masterful film.
Alec Guinness makes his screen debut in Lean's still definitive screen version of the Dickens novel.
Lean was determined not to emerge from the shadow of Coward to disappear behind the even larger one of Dickens. Rigorously paring down the novel to what would work best on film, he concentrated on the relationship between Pip and Estella, while revealing a taste for strong-willed, obsessive characters, with which, as an exacting perfectionist himself, he could easily identify.
