Metropolis

The recently restored version of Fritz Lang's sci-fi masterpiece.

Metropolis is rumoured to be the most expensive silent film ever made. Fritz Lang's science fiction masterpiece remains a vivid and compelling vision, even though the future it envisaged has since passed. Part of the film's fascination is its disturbing ambiguity: is it a critique of the mechanisation of society or a spectacular homage to dystopia? Substantially cut after its release, we are showing the recently restored version, using recovered footage, of one of cinema's enduring spectacles.

The screening on Monday 6 February will be introduced by Nathalie Morris.
