Preview: Alexandra
Remarkably powerful and beautiful film from Russia's leading director.
An indomitable Russian matron pays a sentimental visit to her grandson in the front line of Russia's Chechen war, and with her we experience an eerie 'war without war'.
Alexander Sokurov's (Russian Ark, The Sun) latest film is set during Russia's Chechen war. The film follows Alexandra (a remarkable performance by Galina Vishnevskaya), a particularly dignified old woman, as she visits her grandson who is fighting on the front lines. Sokurov's examination of war- torn Grozny though the eyes of a grandmother is extremely powerful and, indeed, extraordinarily beautiful. A remarkable film from Russia's leading director.
